Homemade Aguachiles recipe

Aguachiles is a refreshing and spicy Mexican dish that features raw shrimp or seafood marinated in a spicy green chili and lime sauce. It’s a popular dish along the coastal regions of Mexico, known for its bold flavors and vibrant colors. Here’s a homemade Aguachiles recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound large, fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 6-8 fresh green serrano chiles (adjust for desired spiciness)
  • 1 cup fresh cilantro leaves
  • 4-6 cloves garlic, peeled
  • Juice of 8-10 limes (about 1 cup)
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 cucumber, peeled, seeded, and sliced into thin rounds
  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro, for garnish
  • Thinly sliced radishes, for garnish (optional)
  • Avocado slices, for garnish (optional)
  • Tostadas or tortilla chips, for serving

Instructions:

  1. Begin by preparing the shrimp. You can leave them whole or cut them into bite-sized pieces. Place the shrimp in a bowl and set them aside.
  2. In a blender or food processor, combine the fresh green serrano chiles (adjust the number to your preferred level of spiciness), cilantro leaves, and garlic cloves.
  3. Add the lime juice to the blender or food processor. Blend the mixture until it’s smooth and the chiles, cilantro, and garlic are well incorporated.
  4. Taste the sauce and add salt as needed. Remember that the shrimp will absorb some of the salt, so it’s okay if the sauce tastes a bit salty.
  5. Pour the sauce over the shrimp, making sure all the shrimp are well coated. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for about 15-20 minutes to allow the shrimp to marinate. The acid from the lime juice will “cook” the shrimp, turning them opaque and firm.
  6. While the shrimp are marinating, prepare your garnishes. Slice the cucumber into thin rounds, thinly slice the red onion, and chop fresh cilantro. You can also slice radishes and avocado for additional garnishes.
  7. After the shrimp have marinated, remove them from the refrigerator.
  8. To serve, arrange the marinated shrimp on a serving platter or individual plates. Scatter the sliced cucumber, red onion, and chopped cilantro over the shrimp.
  9. If desired, garnish with thinly sliced radishes and avocado slices.
  10. Serve your homemade Aguachiles with tostadas or tortilla chips on the side for scooping up the delicious sauce and enjoying the refreshing flavors.

Aguachiles is a perfect appetizer or light meal, especially on a hot day when you want something spicy and citrusy to cool you down. Enjoy the vibrant and bold flavors of this Mexican dish!
