French Onion Soup Recipe

French Onion Soup is a classic and comforting dish known for its rich, savory broth and caramelized onions, topped with melted cheese. Here’s a traditional recipe to make French Onion Soup:

Ingredients:

  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced (yellow or white onions work well)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine (optional)
  • 8 cups beef broth (or vegetable broth for a vegetarian version)
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 4-6 slices of French baguette
  • 2 cups grated Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven, heat the butter and olive oil over medium-low heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions to the pot and stir to coat them with the butter and oil. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 20-30 minutes or until they become caramelized and golden brown. You can sprinkle the sugar over the onions to help with the caramelization process.
  3. Once the onions are caramelized, add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
  4. If using, pour in the dry white wine to deglaze the pot, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. Allow the wine to simmer and reduce by half, about 3-4 minutes.
  5. Add the beef or vegetable broth and bay leaves to the pot. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Preheat your broiler.
  7. Ladle the hot soup into individual oven-safe bowls or crocks.
  8. Place a slice of French baguette on top of each bowl of soup.
  9. Sprinkle a generous amount of grated Gruyère or Swiss cheese over the bread.
  10. Place the bowls under the broiler until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Keep a close eye on it to avoid burning.
  11. Remove the bowls from the broiler (be careful; they’ll be hot), garnish with fresh thyme or parsley if desired, and serve the French Onion Soup hot.

Enjoy this classic French Onion Soup with its rich and savory flavors, topped with gooey, melted cheese. It’s perfect for a comforting meal on a chilly day.
