Shrimp and Grits
Ingredients:
- 5 slices of bacon or other meat of your choice
- 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1/2 onion, chopped
- 1 small tomato, chopped
- 1 small bell pepper, chopped
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon Gullah seasoning (or Creole seasoning)
- 2 tablespoons Wonder gravy flour or all-purpose flour
- 1.5 cups broth or water
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Cooked grits, for serving
Instructions:
- In a skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon until crispy. Remove the bacon from the skillet and set aside, leaving the bacon grease in the skillet.
- Add the chopped onion, tomato, and bell pepper to the skillet with the bacon grease. Cook until the vegetables are soft and translucent.
- Season the shrimp with garlic powder and Gullah seasoning. Add the seasoned shrimp to the skillet with the cooked vegetables.
- In a small bowl, mix together the Wonder gravy flour (or all-purpose flour) with the broth or water until smooth. Pour this mixture into the skillet with the shrimp and vegetables.
- Cook the shrimp and vegetable mixture until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve the shrimp and vegetable mixture over cooked grits, topped with crumbled bacon.
- Enjoy your homemade Shrimp and Grits!
Quarantine Tip: If you don’t have fresh vegetables, you can use 1/2 cup salsa to add flavor to the dish instead. Adjust seasoning as needed.
