This classic Chinese side dish highlights tender Chinese broccoli (gai lan) paired with a savory garlic oyster sauce, perfect for complementing any meal.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb (450 g) Chinese broccoli (gai lan), trimmed
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 2 tablespoons water
Directions:
- Prepare the Chinese broccoli:
Wash and trim the gai lan, separating the thick stalks from the leafy tops if needed. - Blanch the broccoli:
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt and the Chinese broccoli. Blanch for 1-2 minutes, then transfer to an ice bath to stop the cooking process. Drain and set aside. - Prepare the sauce:
In a small bowl, mix oyster sauce, soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, and water. - Cook the garlic:
Heat vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium heat. Add minced garlic and stir-fry until fragrant, about 30 seconds. - Combine sauce and broccoli:
Add the prepared sauce to the skillet, then toss in the blanched Chinese broccoli. Stir-fry for 1-2 minutes to coat evenly. - Serve:
Transfer to a serving plate, drizzle with any remaining sauce, and enjoy warm.
