Homemade Caramel

Create a smooth, rich caramel sauce with just a few simple ingredients. Perfect for drizzling over desserts, dipping apples, or adding to your favorite drinks!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed
  • ½ cup heavy cream, at room temperature
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt (optional, for salted caramel)

Directions:

  1. Melt the Sugar:
    • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, heat the sugar, stirring constantly with a heatproof spatula or wooden spoon.
    • The sugar will clump, then melt into a thick amber liquid. Be patient, and avoid burning the sugar.
  2. Add the Butter:
    • Carefully stir in the butter. The mixture will bubble up rapidly, so stir cautiously until the butter is fully melted and combined.
  3. Add the Cream:
    • Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring. The caramel will bubble vigorously again. Continue stirring until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
  4. Optional Salt Addition:
    • If making salted caramel, stir in the sea salt.
  5. Cool and Store:
    • Remove the saucepan from heat and let the caramel cool for 10-15 minutes. Transfer to a glass jar or airtight container and let cool completely before sealing.
