Brazilian Seafood Rice: A Flavorful Tropical Dish

Brazilian Seafood Rice, or “Arroz de Marisco,” is a vibrant, aromatic dish filled with fresh seafood, rice, and a mix of spices that brings the flavors of the ocean to your table. It’s perfect for a family dinner or a special occasion!

Ingredients

For the Rice and Seafood:

  • 1 lb mixed seafood (shrimp, mussels, squid, and fish fillets)
  • 2 cups long-grain white rice
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/4 tsp chili flakes (optional for spice)
  • 2 cups chicken or seafood broth
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Juice of 1 lime

Directions

  1. Prepare the Seafood:
If using shrimp, mussels, or other shellfish, make sure they’re cleaned and deveined. Cut the fish fillets into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Cook the Vegetables:
Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, garlic, and bell peppers. Sauté for about 5 minutes until softened.
  3. Add the Tomatoes and Spices:
Stir in the chopped tomatoes, paprika, cumin, turmeric, and chili flakes (if using). Cook for 2-3 minutes until the tomatoes break down and the spices become fragrant.
  4. Cook the Rice:
Add the rice to the pot and stir to coat with the vegetable and spice mixture. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Add the Liquids:
Pour in the chicken or seafood broth and coconut milk. Stir well and bring to a simmer. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover the pot and cook on low heat for 15 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
  6. Add the Seafood:
Once the rice is cooked, gently stir in the seafood. Cover and cook for another 5-7 minutes until the seafood is fully cooked and tender.
  7. Finish the Dish:
Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the fresh cilantro, parsley, and lime juice. Adjust seasoning if needed.
  8. Serve:
Serve the Brazilian Seafood Rice hot, garnished with additional herbs if desired. You can pair it with a side of sautéed vegetables or a fresh salad.
