Ingredients
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 lb Italian sausage (mild or spicy), casings removed
- 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 red bell pepper, chopped
- 2 (15 oz) cans cannellini or kidney beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
- 1 cup beef or chicken broth
- 2 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1 tsp dried basil
- ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Grated Parmesan and chopped fresh basil (for garnish)
Directions
Step 1: Brown the Meat
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add Italian sausage and ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.
Step 2: Sauté Veggies
- Add chopped onion, garlic, and red bell pepper to the pot. Cook for 4–5 minutes until soft and fragrant.
Step 3: Add Tomatoes & Beans
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, beans, and broth. Mix to combine.
Step 4: Season and Simmer
- Add Italian seasoning, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
