Easy Italian Chili

A delicious Italian twist on classic chili! This hearty, flavorful dish combines ground meat, beans, tomatoes, and bold Italian herbs—perfect for busy weeknights or cozy weekends.


Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb Italian sausage (mild or spicy), casings removed
  • 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 (15 oz) cans cannellini or kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Grated Parmesan and chopped fresh basil (for garnish)

Directions

Step 1: Brown the Meat

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add Italian sausage and ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.

Step 2: Sauté Veggies

  1. Add chopped onion, garlic, and red bell pepper to the pot. Cook for 4–5 minutes until soft and fragrant.

Step 3: Add Tomatoes & Beans

  1. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, beans, and broth. Mix to combine.

Step 4: Season and Simmer

  1. Add Italian seasoning, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 5: Serve

  1. Ladle chili into bowls and top with grated Parmesan and fresh basil if desired.
  2. Serve with crusty bread or over cooked pasta for a hearty twist!
