Ingredients

For the hamburger steaks:

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp oil (for frying)

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Step 1: Make the Patties

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mix just until combined—don’t overwork the meat.
  3. Form into 4–6 patties.

Step 2: Brown the Steaks

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add patties and cook 3–4 minutes per side until browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked through).
  3. Remove and set aside.

Step 3: Make the Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter.
  2. Add sliced onions (and mushrooms if using) and cook until tender and golden, about 8–10 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle in the flour and stir well to coat.
  4. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Simmer until thickened, 4–5 minutes.

Step 4: Simmer Together

  1. Return the patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over the top.
  2. Cover and simmer on low for 15–20 minutes, until patties are cooked through and tender.
