Chicken Fried Steak with Gravy

Crispy, golden-fried steak smothered in a creamy peppered gravy—this Southern classic is pure comfort food perfection!

Ingredients:

For the Steak:

  • 4 cube steaks (about 4–6 oz each)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk or buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Gravy:

  • ¼ cup pan drippings (from frying)
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2½ cups whole milk
  • Salt & lots of black pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Prep your dredging station:
In one bowl, whisk together eggs and milk.
In another bowl, mix flour with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper.
  2. Dredge the steaks:
Dip each cube steak in the flour mixture, then the egg mixture, and again in the flour mixture. Press flour in firmly. Set aside for 10 minutes to help the coating stick.
  3. Fry the steaks:
Heat ½ inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Fry each steak 3–4 minutes per side, until golden brown. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.
  4. Make the gravy:
Pour off all but ¼ cup of the oil. Stir in ¼ cup flour and whisk over medium heat for 1 minute.
Slowly whisk in the milk and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened.
Season with salt and plenty of black pepper.
  5. Serve it up:
Plate the steaks and generously spoon warm gravy over the top. Pair with mashed potatoes or biscuits for the full Southern experience!
