  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, finely chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix the ingredients together until well combined.
  2. Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval or round patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the vegetable oil. Once the oil is hot, add the hamburger patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add a bit more oil if needed, and then add the thinly sliced onions. Cook the onions over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle the flour over the caramelized onions and stir to combine. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to remove the raw taste of the flour.
  6. Slowly pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, which should take about 5-7 minutes.
  7. Season the onion gravy with salt and pepper to taste. Adjust the seasoning according to your preference.
  8. Return the hamburger patties to the skillet with the onion gravy. Spoon some of the gravy over the patties.
  9. Simmer the hamburger steaks in the gravy for an additional 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together and the patties to absorb some of the gravy.
  10. Serve the hamburger steaks with onion gravy over mashed potatoes or cooked rice, and enjoy this hearty and comforting meal.

This dish is a true classic, and it’s sure to satisfy your comfort food cravings.
