A classic, hearty meal featuring tender cubed steak smothered in a rich, savory onion gravy. Perfect for a comforting dinner!
Ingredients:
- 4 cubed steaks
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 3 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tbsp cornstarch (optional for thickening)
- 2 tbsp cold water (if using cornstarch)
Directions:
- Prepare the steak:
In a shallow dish, mix together the flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Dredge the cubed steaks in the flour mixture, coating them evenly on both sides. - Brown the steaks:
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the cubed steaks and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside. - Sauté the onions:
In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown (about 8-10 minutes). This will create a rich, flavorful base for the gravy. - Make the gravy:
Once the onions are cooked, add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme. Stir to combine, scraping any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. - Thicken the gravy (optional):
If you’d like a thicker gravy, mix the cornstarch with cold water in a small bowl to form a slurry. Slowly pour the slurry into the skillet while stirring constantly, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency. - Return the steaks:
Return the cubed steaks to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy and onions over them. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes to let the flavors combine and the steaks absorb some of the gravy. - Serve:
Serve the cubed steak with onion gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or with crusty bread to soak up the gravy.
