Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy

A classic, hearty meal featuring tender cubed steak smothered in a rich, savory onion gravy. Perfect for a comforting dinner!

Ingredients:

  • 4 cubed steaks
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (optional for thickening)
  • 2 tbsp cold water (if using cornstarch)

Directions:

  1. Prepare the steak:
In a shallow dish, mix together the flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Dredge the cubed steaks in the flour mixture, coating them evenly on both sides.
  2. Brown the steaks:
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the cubed steaks and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Sauté the onions:
In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown (about 8-10 minutes). This will create a rich, flavorful base for the gravy.
  4. Make the gravy:
Once the onions are cooked, add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme. Stir to combine, scraping any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. Thicken the gravy (optional):
If you’d like a thicker gravy, mix the cornstarch with cold water in a small bowl to form a slurry. Slowly pour the slurry into the skillet while stirring constantly, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
  6. Return the steaks:
Return the cubed steaks to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy and onions over them. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes to let the flavors combine and the steaks absorb some of the gravy.
  7. Serve:
Serve the cubed steak with onion gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or with crusty bread to soak up the gravy.
